The Second “Chinese Language Teaching Idols” Comes to a Successful Ending

On June 29th, the Second “Chinese Language Teaching Idols” Summer Camp and the 2018 Exchange Conference on Teaching of Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL), hosted by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and co-organized by China Education Television and Beijing Language and Culture University, came to a successful ending. The award ceremony was held on the same day, during which Liu Limin, President of the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE) and Chairman of the MTCSOL Steering Committee, Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, Ke Chunhui, Secretary of the Party Committee of China Education Television, Liu Li, President of Beijing Language and Culture University, and other guests attended the ceremony and presented awards to the contestants.

The finals consisted of two parts: lesson giving and keynote speech. In the lesson giving part, the contestants were supposed to give Chinese lessons to foreign students of different age in various situations. The contestants applied the connotations of Chinese culture to language teaching and adopted the task-based teaching model as the carrier in which students are highly involved to display the student-centered and cross-culture-communication-targeted philosophy of Chinese language teaching. In the keynote speech “Remain True to Our Original Aspiration”, six contestants shared their touching stories of remaining true to their heart in pursuing the “Chinese Language Teaching Dream”.

Professor Zhang Yiwu, a well-known cultural scholar of Peking University, Professor Zhong Yinghua, Vice President of Tianjin Normal University, Professor Zhang Bo, Director of the Academic Committee of Beijing Language and Culture University, Professor Xiu Huajing, Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Kentucky, and Jiang Sizhe (UK), the champion of the 9th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students, as guests of honor, all made enlightening comments on the performances of all contestants.

After being commented and graded by the experts and voted by the review group, Zeng Andi from Beijing Foreign Studies University and Han Maoyu, a Nigerian student from Nankai University, respectively won the championship in the competition for Chinese masters and the competition for masters from foreign countries; Lu Yifei from Beijing Language and Culture University, Sun Mengnan from Fujian Normal University and Kanda Rumi, a Japanese student from Peking University, and Gu punai, a Kazakhstan student from Beijing Language and Culture University, respectively won the second place; Lv Zhe, Che Junchi, Wang Keran and Ai Moben (USA), Bai Tingli (Turkey) and He Haode (Cameroon) respectively won the third place.

Liu Limin presented the awards to the two champions and delivered a speech in which he pointed out “This year’s exchanges have scaled new heights with new breakthroughs and new achievements.” He said that many of the contestants in “Chinese Language Teaching Idols” have become stars in the circle of international education of Chinese language, and the competition itself has rapidly grown into a well-known brand in the field of Chinese education and culture. In the finals, the fluent Chinese, exquisite teaching skills, extensive cultural knowledge, and broad international vision of the top 6 contestants fully demonstrated the excellent professional quality and enthusiasm of masters of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages and effectively revealed the new achievements made in the disciplinary construction of international education of Chinese language in the new era, which is very encouraging and inspiring! At last, he wished all students to become idols in their life journey and career development, idols in helping build the Confucius Institute and the international education of Chinese language, and idols in promoting people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and other countries and the building of a community of shared future for mankind!
